A video of a mama mboga from Gikomba Market in Nairobi has gone massively viral after she was filmed conducting her business entirely in flawless Queen’s English, stunning customers and bystanders alike. The clip, shared by a boda boda rider, has been viewed over 4 million times across TikTok, Instagram, and X in just 48 hours.

The Video That Stopped Nairobi

In the clip, the trader — identified only as Mama Wanjiku — is seen calmly negotiating vegetable prices with a customer, switching effortlessly between English and Gikuyu, quoting commodity prices and giving change with impressive precision. “Tomatoes are KSh 80 per kilo today, madam. Yesterday’s rain affected supply from Limuru,” she is heard saying.

Her Story

Mama Wanjiku later told Kelele254 that she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature from the University of Nairobi, graduating in 2008. Unable to secure formal employment, she turned to trade to raise her three children. “Education is in your head, not your job title,” she told our reporter with a smile.

Kenya Reacts

The video has sparked a national conversation about graduate unemployment, the dignity of informal work, and Kenya’s broken job market. Several companies have reportedly reached out to offer Mama Wanjiku formal employment opportunities.
