The United States government has published a list of 78 East Africans — including photographs and names — who are facing deportation. Of the 78 individuals named, 45 are Kenyan nationals, making this the largest number of Kenyans to appear on a single US deportation notice in recent years. The list has caused significant alarm within Kenya’s diaspora community in the United States.
Why Were They Named?
The individuals listed are reportedly in the United States without valid immigration status or have had their visa applications or asylum claims rejected. US immigration authorities say the publication of names and photographs is intended to assist in locating individuals who have not complied with deportation orders or who have evaded Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Reaction from the Kenyan Community
Kenyan diaspora organisations in the US have condemned the public naming of individuals as a violation of privacy and dignity. The Kenya Community Abroad (KCA) said it is seeking legal support for affected families and has called on the Kenyan Embassy in Washington D.C. to urgently intervene on behalf of the affected nationals.
“Publicising names and photos of people who have not been convicted of any crime is cruel and inhumane,” said a spokesperson for one diaspora advocacy group. “These are mothers, fathers, and breadwinners whose remittances support families back in Kenya.”
Kenyan Government Response
The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has not yet issued a formal statement on the matter. However, sources within the ministry say officials are aware of the situation and are in communication with the Kenyan Mission in Washington to establish the legal status of those named and to provide consular assistance where possible.
Kenya’s Deportation Numbers
Kenya receives hundreds of deportees from the US and other countries each year. The government has been urged to do more to support returnees with reintegration programmes, given that many have lived abroad for years and face significant challenges readjusting to life in Kenya.
